30 years of Rough Trade + commemorative shows (in the UK) w/Jarvis & Jeffrey Lewis! 10 Nov 2008

JARVIS COCKER - ROUGH TRADE RECORDS
LOOKING ROUGH AT 30
30 Years Of Rough Trade Records

• Rough Trade Records 30th Birthday UK Tour
• Jeffrey Lewis added to the bill
• Jarvis Cocker to headline, showcasing new material plus special Rough Trade guest support
• Forthcoming BBC Documentary entitled "Do It Yourself - The Story Of Rough Trade" in October

Geoff Travis and Jeannette Lee at Rough Trade Records are delighted to announce a UK tour to commemorate the label's historic 30th Birthday. Taking in Sheffield, London, Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham it will be headlined by our own incomparable Jarvis Cocker, and now we can announce that our own Jeffrey Lewis will be joining the celebrations. A video of Jeffrey performing 'A Quick Biography Of Barack Obama', his comic book / ode in support to the Democratic presidential candidate has become something of a youtube sensation, see it here.

With recent scorching US live shows at New York's Music Hall of Williamsburg and Chicago's Pitchfork Music Festival (where he showcased blistering material from his forthcoming record due mid 2009) still ringing in the ears of the lucky who managed to witness them, there's no doubt that Jarvis is in fine form, and these dates represent a rare opportunity to catch him in full flow.

JARVIS COCKER :
"Strangely enough, this is also the 30th anniversary of my first involvement with making music (the first incarnation of Pulp was formed during an Economics lesson towards the end of October 1978). How could I have known then that our two destinies would become so intertwined? I'm proud to be part of these birthday celebrations - I know there's an awful lot of Anniversary Culture out there but this is one that's actually worth celebrating: Rough Trade has always been about discovering the new, exploring the unknown & giving a voice to those who would otherwise remain unheard. And they're still doing it 30 years on. This is no dewy-eyed nostalgia trip - it's an on-going revolution. Stand up & be counted! (Actually, comfortable seating IS available in most of the venues - should you require it)."

Live Dates (sorry folks, all in the UK!)
Nov 25 Sheffield Academy*
Nov 26 London Shepherds Bush Empire*
Nov 28 Edinburgh Picture House*
Nov 30 Mancester Academy*
Dec 02 Birmingham Academy

Sad news from The Long Blondes 20 Oct 2008

from their myspace page today...sad news from Sheffield. We wish Dorian the best on his road to recovery, and we will miss working with them greatly. They are a class act, and a very hardworking band that deserves nothing but the best.

Monday, October 20, 2008

We have decided to call it a day.

The main reason for this is that I suffered from a stroke in June and unfortunately I do not know when / if I will be well enough to play guitar again.

On behalf of the band I'd like to say a big thank you to anyone who ever came to one of our shows, bought one of our records or danced to one of our songs in a club. Thank you, if it wasn't for you the whole thing would have been pointless.

Finally on a personal note, thanks for all your well wishing messages.

Emiliana Torrini is so talented and amazing and gorgeous - we could go on - and we're really happy that the fine folks that handle music for Grey's Anatomy agree. Her song "Jungle Drum" was featured on last night's episode, and her music has been on the show a couple of times in past seasons.

You can stream the song here thanks for our friends at NPR

JEFFREY LEWIS CONFIRMS U.S. TOUR !!! 24 Sep 2008

JEFFREY LEWIS CONFIRMS U.S. TOUR
Over 130 Shows Performed This Year
Lewis Blogs For The NY Times
New Issue Of Fuff Released
Entire World Concludes:  Jeffrey Lewis Is The Hardest Working Man In Show Biz

The Jeffrey Lewis Band has confirmed a tour of North America this fall.  Kicking off in Vancouver, BC on October 23 the tour takes them across the US and will end in  NYC in mid November.  His latest (and 4th) album 12 Crass Songs was released earlier this year by Rough Trade Records.  The album is a collection of songs by the legendary anarchist punk band Crass, reworked by Jeffrey into glorious folk, rock, psychedelic, orchestral and electronica productions which dazzle the ear while losing none of the political power of the originals.

Since the release of 12 Crass Songs Lewis has been working almost non-stop. He has crisscrossed the US and Europe with his band, playing over 130 shows thus far in 2008, including numerous festivals, solo acoustic shows, and support tours with the likes of his fans The Mountain Goats, Steven Malkmus & the Jicks, British Sea Power, Super Furry Animals, the Cribs and Los Campesinos! On those tours Lewis has been highlighting the tracks from 12 Crass Songs but this fall run will see him performing some of his older work as well as trying out new material.

Most rock bands would stop there – an album release and subsequent tours are all that is expected!  But not Lewis.  On a recent and rare break he put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and, joining the likes of Rosanne Cash, Andrew Bird and Suzanne Vega, was a contributor to The New York Times blog “Measure For Measure” ruminating on the question, “What is an original song, when it comes to folk music (or any genre)?”  Needless to say this subject kicked off plenty of debate in the comments section.  http://measureformeasure.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/03/23/jeffrey-lewis/

Not only is Lewis an excellent songwriter he’s also the critically acclaimed creator of the comic book series Fuff (in fact his live shows incorporate "low budget videos," Jeff's large illustrations displayed to accompany certain songs). In  2008, amongst all the touring and opining for the NY Times, Jeffrey also found the time to pen another issue that has just been released.

Come see Jeffrey before he finally does take a much-deserved break (where he will most likely spend his time writing a new album!).  Tour dates are below.

BASIA BULAT CONFIRMS SEPTEMBER DATES IN THE U.S. 13 Aug 2008

“(‘In The Night’) is one of 2008’s great singles.”    NPR

“(Basia Bulat) writes acoustic-guitar-based folk songs built around dramatic crests that highlight her trembling voice.”             Rolling Stone

“…her backwoodsy chamber pop boasts dazzling potential.”   Paste

BASIA  BULAT CONFIRMS  SEPTEMBER  DATES IN THE U.S.
Shortlisted For Canada’s Polaris Prize
Headlining show at NYC’s Highline Ballroom on September 19

In support of her debut album Oh, My Darling (Rough Trade Records), Basia Bulat has confirmed a short US tour this September.   The first date is in Louisville, KY on September 11 and the tour winds up on the 20th of the month in Cambridge, MA.    She will be headlining The Highline Ballroom in New York City on September 19.

Since the release of Oh, My Darling, Bulat and her band have been crisscrossing the US touring on their own and with the likes of DeVotchKa and St. Vincent earning the admiration of fans and critics along the way.     The admiration is no less in her home country of   Canada where she was recently shortlisted for this year’s Polaris Prize (the winner will be announced on September 29).

Since the age of three, Basia has been sitting on piano stools and trying to hammer things out. It started with her piano-teacher mum, but along the way Basia’s picked up guitar, autoharp, banjo, ukulele, sax and flute. In high school her instrument was the upright bass – a lone girl among “eight-foot-tall guys in the back of the orchestra, goofing off with the tubas”. There’s a sense of play that still suffuses her music, jostling under the songs of regret and love, want and joy.

In the summer of 2006, Basia went to live in Montreal. Through friends she met Howard Bilerman, an engineer and co-owner of the famed Hotel 2 Tango studio. Basia cashed some student loans to record with Bilerman.  It was ultimately these rough early takes, hoarse with excitement that formed the bulk of Oh, My Darling. Despite the original intention, these tracks are breathless, thirsty, dislodged from dreary nostalgia. There are strings, yes, and acoustic guitar, but also a frantic drum-kit gallop; the influence of the spirits of wild Jeff Magnum, big-voiced Odetta, Emily Dickinson and all those boisterous soul-music singles. It’s this spark that sets Basia Bulat apart from the raft of typical singer-songwriters.

THE VEILS Fall U.S. Tour!!! 06 Aug 2008

The Veils

The Veils are a London based quartet (with ties to Oklahoma City!) who will be coming back to our shores this fall for a slew of dates supporting Liam Finn!!! They'll be playing new songs from the currently untitled (working title: LOL) follow up to last year's critically acclaimed Nux Vomica released by Rough Trade.

Finn Andrews weathered many false starts with various line ups in earlier incarnations of the band. The Veils are now comprised of singer/guitarist Finn Andrews, Sophia Burn (bass), Henning Dietz (drums) and Dan Raishbrook (guitar and noize-wiv-a-Z).

Re: Oklahoma. Amidst a slew of dates from coast to coast, they found time to become Oklahoma City locals for three months, wrestle snakes, find a ghost town, lose their innocence, and document it all in a much loved tour diary, sections of which, including "The Bit Where Henning Totals a Segway" are currently being made into a MAJOR motion picture starring Billy Zane, Alan Cumming, and a bawling toddler named "Hero."

Congrats To A Couple Of Our Canadian Artists! 08 Jul 2008

Canada day may officially take place on July 1 but for us at the Beggars Group USA office this year we're going to celebrate it this week. Why? Two of our artists - Basia Bulat and Holy Fuck - have been nominated for the Polaris Prize. Basia for her album Oh, My Darling and Holy Fuck for their album LP. The long list had 40 potential winners and yesterday, July 7, the list was pared down to just 10.

The Polaris Prize is Canada's equivalent to Britain's esteemed Mercury Prize.

Who is going to get bragging rights and the fat $20,000** check? We all have to wait until September 29 when the winner will be announced at a special ceremony in Toronto.

More info on the Polaris Prize

** Canadian dollars we assume!

New Emiliana Torrini album coming! 01 Jul 2008

Rough Trade is delighted to announce a stunning new album from the hugely talented Emiliana Torrini.
Hear the title track: "Me And Armini"

Following her critically acclaimed albums Love In The Time Of Science and her Rough Trade debut Fisherman's Woman, the forthcoming Me And Armini (release date September 9th) sees her working once again with her long time producer/collaborator Dan Carey, resulting in what we feel is destined to be one of the loveliest albums of 2008.

Me And Armini is a hugely ambitious and aspirational pop record with Emiliana’s soaring voice centre stage, bolstered by a rich gamut of musical styles. From the summery skank of the title track to the surging, breathless “Jungle Drum” and the yearning “Big Jumps” and much more in between, Me And Armini is a truly fantastic album. For those not in the know, the pedigree paring of Torrini's songwriting and Carey's sonic alchemy (currently being put to work on the new Franz Ferdinand and recent Hot Chip records) has previously combined to world-beating effect when they co-wrote/produced a number-one hit for Kylie Minogue in the shape of the huge-selling pop smash “Slow” as well as contributing “Gollum's Song” to the multi-platinum soundtrack to The Lord Of The Rings.

Emiliana Torrini is half Icelandic, half Italian. She grew up in Iceland in a town outside Reykjavik and spent her childhood summers with her grandmother in the far east of Iceland out in the wild, spacious countryside. Her teen summers were spent in Germany with her Italian uncle. Her worldwide debut album, 1999’s Love In The Time Of Science, was produced by Roland Orzabal of Tears For Fears and was a gorgeous electronic trip-hop influenced album. Her second album, Fisherman’s Woman was a little closer to Nick and included the song “Honeymoon Child“ written by Smog’s Bill Callahan, who Emiliana spent some time writing with in the US. Fisherman’s Woman’s theme was loss – sometimes dripping with sadness but more frequently imbued with almost magical optimism.

Me and Armini will be released by Rough Trade in the US on September 9th, and marks another new chapter in Emiliana’s impressive career.

Adam Green to open for Dr.John! 11 Jun 2008

In a concert combination that will make your head explode, our own ADAM GREEN will be opening for DR. JOHN on TUESDAY, JUNE 17th at the HIGHLINE BALLROOM !

I've said it before and I'll say it again - drop any preconceived notions you have about Adam - because he's made an amazing record that is truly impressive.
Have a listen to his gorgeous song "Getting Led"
http://www.beggarsgroupusa.com/mp3/adamgreen_getting_led.mp3

It's a very special night for the both of them. It's Dr. John's cd release show, and Dr. John is one of Adam's heroes, so opening up for him is a true career highlight. I asked Adam to explain to me what this opening slot meant to him, and this is what he said.

"Dr. John is an adorable man. I was originally attracted to his zu-zu man persona, but now I would happily flip through his hat collection. My favorite song of his is "Black Widow Spider."  It's hard to describe the type of music that is... it's almost goth-funk I guess.  I dig goth music 'cause I'm a dancing maniac these days.  I buy a lot of Dr. John's records on ebay.. Maybe if he hears my good music, he would allow me to write some of his new album with him.  Since my keyboard player is having a baby soon, maybe Dr. John could play keyboards with me at Reading Festival.  You never know because I get lucky sometimes."

TAKEN BY TREES CONFIRM NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

“Sweet Child Of Mine” Tour Single To Be Released

Taken By Trees have just confirmed a 2-week North American tour. It will kick off February 22 in New York City. Taken By Trees is Victoria Bergsman’s new project. You may also recognize Victoria’s voice from one of the biggest and most popular songs of last year – Peter Bjorn & John’s infectious single “Young Folks.”

On Open Field, Bergsman was aided and abetted by fellow Peter, Bjorn & John co-horts Bjorn Yttling (on various instruments and string arrangements) and John Eriksson (on all ‘very personal’ percussion instruments - marimba and vibraphone). The album also features guitar by Andreas Soderstrom, along with piano arrangements and backing vocals by Verity Susman from Electrelane. Victoria and Bjorn produced the album together.

Jeffrey Lewis Covers CRASS 08 Nov 2007

In January of 2008 Rough Trade Records will release Jeffrey Lewis' fourth album, 12 Crass Songs. The album is a collection of songs by the legendary anarchist punk band Crass, reworked by Jeffrey into glorious folk, rock, psychedelic, orchestral and electronica productions which dazzle the ear while losing none of the political power of the originals.

Lewis was raised on New York City's Lower East Side and is a maker of comic books, tragi-comic folk narratives, and lysergic garage rock. For the recording of 12 Crass Songs Lewis was joined by Helen Schreiner on back up vocals. Playing live with his brother Jack on bass, David Beauchamp on drums, The Jeffrey Lewis Band mixes 60s acoustic psychedelia like Pearls Before Swine with the experimental art-punk of the Fall and the urban lyricism of Lou Reed, sounding a bit like if Woody Guthrie fronted Sonic Youth.

12 Crass Songs follows in the footsteps of the critically acclaimed Jeffrey & Jack Lewis: City & Eastern Songs, which was produced by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Butthole Surfers, Low, Daniel Johnston, etc) and was selected as one of 2006's best albums in Time Out NY, the Boston Globe, CMJ Monthly and elsewhere. Jeffrey's most recent comic book series Fuff is currently up to issue five.

Jeffrey Lewis has toured the US, UK and Europe and his live shows incorporate "low budget videos," Jeff's large illustrations displayed to accompany certain songs.

New Film School record in September! 22 Jun 2007

Giddy Up! Our friends in Film School have delivered an amazing new album that will be out in September. Here are the details...

Hideout is Film School’s second full-length for Beggars Banquet. Written largely in Greg Bertens’ Los Angeles apartment, recorded in both LA and San Francisco studios with engineer Dan Long, mixed by Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Band of Horses, the Shins, Stephen Malkmus), and produced by Bertens, Hideout builds on the band’s pretty, shoegazer pop and richly textured space-rock soundscapes by emphasizing powerful rhythms and beautiful melodies that take the songwriting to a new level. Bertens signature vocal delivery shows more breadth on this release, and evokes a plaintive longing that is magnified by the addition of female voices, courtesy of bassist Lorelei Plotcyzk and guest vocalists Tracy Uba (Timonium) and Leah Piehl. Other guest musicians loaning their talents to the album are Colm O’Ciosoig and Paul Wilson.

Film School’s 2006 self-titled debut for the label earned accolades across the country and across the pond. The band scored coveted opening slots for The National and the Rogers Sisters all over Europe before headlining their own tour of the states. But in the middle of that tour, frontman Greg Bertens got jumped outside a club in Columbus, Ohio; then in Philadelphia, somebody stole the tour van, plowing straight through the security gate of the motel parking lot, with all the band’s equipment inside. Once back home, the stress of a demanding show schedule, the ups and downs of a trying year, and emerging creative differences among bandmates ended with the decision to move forward with a change in personnel, and Film School looking to a fresh beginning with a new album.

Film School is Greg Bertens (vocals, guitar), Dave Dupuis (guitar), Lorelei Plotczyk (bass, vocals), Jason Ruck (keyboards) and James Smith (drums).

Track listing:
1. Dear Me
2. Lectric
3. Meanmedian Mode
4. Sick Hipster Nursed By Suicide Girl
5. Must Try Easier
6. Two Kinds
7. Capitalized I
8. Go Down Together
9. Compare
10. Florida
11. Blizzard Scout
12. Plots and Plans
13. What I Meant To Say
