Peter Murphy On Tour 21 May 2008
Peter Murphy (whose many solo albums you can buy from this very website on CD and mp3) is hitting the road this summer for a full blown North American tour. Since the band broke up right at the release of Bauhaus' highly anticipated new album, Go Away White, this will still do the trick for a support tour. He will be joined by singer/songwriter Ali Eskandarian, who unleashed his debut album back in March on Wildflower Records. An opportunity to see Peter Murphy live is always something to take advantage of, so go catch him if he is coming to a town near you, and make sure you show up early for Ali Eskandarian.

Announcing A Skin, A Night... 07 Apr 2008
A SKIN, A NIGHT
A FILM BY VINCENT MOON
A Skin, A Night is a film about THE NATIONAL made by French filmmaker Vincent Moon.
WATCH THE TRAILER HERE! http://www.thenationalboxer.com/film/
It will be released on DVD by Beggars Banquet on May 20th and will be packaged with a bonus cd, The Virginia EP.
What goes on in A Skin, A Night, though, is not the stuff of well-rehearsed insider history. Nor is it a series of rock’n’roll clichés. Nor is it specifically concerned with the making of The National’s fourth full-length album, Boxer, even though much of it was filmed during sessions for that record at Peter Katis’s Bridgeport, Connecticut studio. A Skin, A Night is less a movie about The National than a movie about how music is made today -- not with classic rock bravado, or debauched indulgence, but through novelistic attention to detail, a collective implosion of personality, and worried worried nights.
When the association between Vincent and The National began, he wasn’t yet known as the auteur behind Le Blogotheque’s Les Concerts A Emporter aka The Take Away Shows. It was well before his tenure as image maker for R.E.M and Arcade Fire. And The National had yet to become one of the most beloved of the current crop of independent rock bands.
A Skin, A Night is a sixty-minute portrait of impressions, mutual affection, and intimate moments you’d never otherwise see. If The National’s lyrics seem to take us inside the human condition, Vincent Moon’s images take us outside, documenting the beauty of the sounds made by our human skin.
A Skin, A Night will be packaged with The Virginia EP, which contains 12 tracks of demos, live versions, radio sessions and b-sides.
The Virginia EP tracklisting:
1) YOU’VE DONE IT AGAIN, VIRGINIA (previously unreleased)
2) SANTA CLARA (UK b-side)
3) BLANK SLATE (UK b-side)
4) TALL SAINT (demo)
5) WITHOUT PERMISSION (unreleased cover of Caroline Martin song)
6) FOREVER AFTER DAYS (demo)
7) REST OF YEARS (demo)
8) SLOW SHOW (demo)
9) LUCKY YOU (daytrotter session)
10) MANSION ON THE HILL (live)
11) FAKE EMPIRE (live)
12) ABOUT TODAY (live)

Devastations are worried about Britney. 22 Feb 2008
The Devastations....so sweet, so caring...so concerned!
They just don't want Brit Brit to make any more
oh, britney.... 7 January 08
i must confess a total fascination with celebrity meltdown. i guess most people would probably hold a similar fascination. perhaps it’s because it allows you to judge those whom normally you may consider ‘beyond judgement’, or maybe it’s just a vicarious thrill – i dunno – but this latest shit with britney has got me on the edge of my seat.
as much as i would like her to be ok and get herself together etc, i would also love little more than to see her in some OJ style car chase through malibu, brandishing a pistol and spewing bile at the TV crews and police.
it’s totally playing out like the classic american tale of the dizzying heights of fame and excess, and i’m all sucked in.
the interesting thing though is her old snugglin’ partner, herr timberlake – who, try as he might, cannot put a foot wrong in life. i don’t know if he has publicly come forward to support britney or whatever – he probably has – but i would love to know his thoughts on the fact that the further britney falls, the higher he climbs.
two ex-mickey mouse club kids (what more perfect symbol of america?) and their seperate, yet intrinsically linked paths.
sometimes i think the CIA is behind all this.
it’ll make the best movie ever.
go britney,
cs xx

Film School: Sights & Sounds in San Diego 06 Dec 2007
FM94/9 has teamed up with the San Diego Museum of Art to stage an on-going evening of art, music and culture. Or least that's how they're billing it. It does sound pretty cool though. SDMA's special exhibition for the night is titled Animated Painting and will feature 25 cinematic works by 14 international contemporary artist who adapt traditional painting and drawing methods to the concepts and technologies of animation. Better yet Film School make up the music portion of Sights & Sounds. They'll be performing in SDMA's auditorium starting at 9pm. Two cash bars and FM94/9 spinning tunes in the museum's rotunda confirm that it's a party. So everyone in San Diego come on down for Sights & Sounds on Thursday, December 13th.

THE NATIONAL on Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson 9/26 21 Sep 2007
Tune in for another amazingly memorable late night TV performance from THE NATIONAL! They will be performing "Apartment Story" on the Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson on Wednesday 9/26.
Film School says THANKS! 11 Sep 2007

OUT TODAY:
FILM SCHOOL's "Hideout"
Film School's new album, "Hideout" is one they couldn't have made without the help of the many people that came to their aid when things got tough for them. The album’s credits include a list of more than 140 people, each of whom came to the rescue—with money, equipment, time, or otherwise—after the band’s gear was stolen last year.
Just after the band's self-titled debut for Beggars Banquet was released, the band scored coveted opening slots for The National and the Rogers Sisters all over Europe before headlining their own tour of the States. But in the middle of that tour, frontman Greg Bertens got jumped outside a club in Columbus, Ohio; then in Philadelphia, somebody stole the tour van, plowing straight through the security gate of the motel parking lot, with all the band’s equipment inside. Once back home, the stress of a demanding show schedule, the ups and downs of a trying year, and emerging creative differences among bandmates ended with the decision to move forward with a change in personnel, and Film School looking to a fresh beginning with a new album.
SPIN.COM SAYS: "The four-minute melancholic pop tresses of "Two Kinds" wafts with watery synths and swishing drums, displaying a slightly new wave edge that recalls the atmospheric wane of Joy Division and the Cure. "There's two kinds of love / And one we used to know," croons Bertens to a psychedelic soundscape that rises and falls with a hardened bass line and pretty, multilayered guitars. Moody, gothic and intense, Film School is definitely fit for the school of rock."

Film School NEW LINE UP NEW ALBUM NEW TOUR DATES 29 Aug 2007
"Hideout" their second full length for Beggars Banquet hits stores September 11th. Check out the MP3 for "Lectric" (track 2) here.
Film School is now Greg Bertens (vocals, guitar), Dave Dupuis (guitar), Lorelei Plotczyk (bass, vocals),
Jason Ruck (keyboards) and James Smith (drums).
"Hideout" was written largely in Greg Bertens’ Los Angeles apartment, recorded in both LA and San Francisco
studios with engineer Dan Long, mixed by Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Band of Horses, the Shins, Stephen Malkmus),
and produced by Bertens. Hideout builds on the band’s pretty, richly textured sound by emphasizing powerful
rhythms and beautiful melodies that take the songwriting to a new level. Bertens signature vocal delivery shows
more breadth on this release, and evokes a plaintive longing that is magnified by the addition of female voices,
courtesy of bassist Lorelei Plotcyzk, and guest vocalists Tracy Uba (Timonium) and Leah Piehl. Other guest
musicians loaning their talents to the album are Colm O’Ciosoig and Paul Wilson.
Some early comments are in, and people are TOTALLY digging "Hideout".....
"The new Film School is simply awesome. It's not over the top, crowded or forced in any way, on any track.
The band doesn't necessarily leave their shoegazey/post-punk roots behind. Instead, Greg Bertens sculpts
Hideout into a more dynamic and thicker sounding album with blissed-out guitars and keys swooping in
exactly when they need to." - LITTLE RADIO
"Someone’s been listening to The Jesus and Mary Chain. Film School must have had a goth-shoegaze epiphany,
because from beginning to end, Hideout is layered, dark pop bliss. It’s quite reassuring to know that a genre
that’s been exploited to the bone can still come out this sick." - XLR8R.COM

i like iLiKETRAiNS 22 Aug 2007
At SXSW earlier this year, The Beggars Group took over Emo's and had a showcase. Many of our bands played, and they were ALL amazing. One band in particular however, took many of our breaths away. It was iLiKETRAiNS. When they played, it was everyone's first time seeing them and meeting them and they were all super cool guys and a whole lot of fun....which is funny, because they sing about DARK topics.
We're really psyched that they will finally have a full-length out in the US on October 23rd. It's called "Elegies To Lessons Learnt" and it's like a history lesson wrapped up in an album.
"Elegies..." attempts to illustrate how history repeats itself, and how the human race fails to learn from its mistakes. The album takes on the Great Fire of London in “25 Sins”, an ill-fated round the world yachtsman in “The Deception”, the only British prime minister ever to be assassinated in “Spencer Perceval”, and the Salem Witch Trials in “We Go Hunting”. Other songs cover massacre, the ‘iron curtain’, the plague and madness.
Keep your eyes out for an mp3 soon!
Bienvenidos a Rough Trade 24 Jul 2007
Obviously, we'll have a bit more to say about this, but as long as everyone is talking about it , we'd just like to welcome Rough Trade to the big boat of love that is the Beggars Group. While we could go on and on, we couldn't have said it finer than our esteemed leader:
i'm very happy to be able to confirm that as of today we have completed our long-rumoured deal with sanctuary and rough trade, and that as a result rough trade is now officially a very welcome addition to our group of labels
welcome one and all !

The National on Letterman 03 May 2007

Brooklyn's favorite sons have been added to the late night TV rotation and confirmed an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman on Tuesday July 24th. We are now starting to worry that band might be getting over exposed but it makes us positively giddy to think Paul Schaffer might just be tickling the ivories with our guys.
Voxtrot Is In The Studio 15 Dec 2006

According to that Voxtrot Kid, the band is officially finished setting up in the studio and are set to begin recording their first-ever full-length. With Victor Van Vugt at the helm (who helped sweeten up Mojave 3's poptacular Puzzles Like You), we expect great things. And, Ramesh also was kind enough to mark the occassion by posting a very stripped down version of Sway - if you compare this to the lush sound of the EP version, hopefully a hint of the great things to come.
